• Red, White, and Blue Layered Cake

Today I wanted to share the cake we baked and decorated for last year’s Independence Day celebration.  From the outside it looked like a typical cake.  My oldest frosted it himself with a homemade caramel frosting from a recipe his grandma gave to us and was delicious. Hence the light brown color. Inside the cake, however, was the surprise.  When you cut into the cake you could see the layers of the cake were red, white, and blue.  Fun!  The cake was a hit at the party, it tasted great, and was pretty simple to make. The Cake: Batter: We used a box of regular store-bought white cake mix.  We mixed the ingredients and…

  • Fashion Friday: The Maxi Dress

With it being the first Friday of official summer break, I decided I would kick off the weekend with some awesome fashion finds! The first thing that came to mind when thinking about clothes that are effortless, comfortable, and yet also still look good (gotta keep my sanity and feel like a human while mothering 3 kids!) I came up with maxi dresses. The maxi dress: epitome of simple, classy, comfy, and perfect for the hot summer weather.  And as it may be TMI but understandable for all moms, the maxi dress is also nice because in the event I need to bend down, sit down, or even crawl I’m still looking presentable,…

  • Fashion Find: Lace Shorts

I had to quick pop in here because I wanted to share something I found! I have been noticing that lace shorts are all over the fashion scene, not to mention they look super comfortable and cute too. For example, I found these shorts at Forever 21: Floral Lace Shorts $22.80 $15.99 As well as these: Crochet Lace Shorts $19.80 What do you all think about these lace shorts from Express? 2 Inch High Rise Bonded Lace Shorts $29.99 But the real reason I am so excited is that I found lace shorts that are just as cute and on clearance at Target.  That’s not even the best part! The kicker is that I found them in…

  • Healthy Snack… and Art

Hi everyone, hope you had an amazing weekend! Ours was filled with sun, some rain, a car show, a flooded park (Mississippi River is slightly overflowing in some places right now) and veggie art! Veggie art? Yes, who knew that vegetables could make way to some fun kid art! Now that the kids are home for the summer I’m always on the lookout for snacks to have on hand that are easy for the kids to grab and go, but are also healthy and inexpensive.  I have been working on getting into the habit of washing and cutting fruits and vegetables as soon as we bring them home from the store because I know…

  • Iced Chai Latte

Hi everyone, hope you had a great start to the week!  The warm weather is finally starting to set in here meaning hot coffee drinks will be replaced with cold beverages.  A favorite refreshing summer drink for me is an iced chai latte which is cool, creamy, and light with hints of spices. As easy as it is to order iced chai from a Starbucks or Caribou coffee shop and feed my addiction love of iced chai, it most certainly also feeds a growing hole in my wallet with a large iced chai easily costing around $4.  So, my solution to this craving? Make them at home! Iced chai lattes are very easy and quick to…

  • End of School and Teacher Gift

Wow, its that time already where school is coming to a close and summer is ready to begin! My oldest had his last day of school on Friday and of course wanted to give his teachers a special personalized gift. As a teacher myself, its always nice to get a personalized gift from a student! We thought long and hard and came up with a quick and easy teacher gift that we know they’ll love and be able to use. All we needed was some Glade candles, ribbon, and foam stickers. The Glade candles were about $5 for two and the ribbon was $1 in the dollar section.  The foam letters were from our craft closet.…

  • Memorial Day and the Start of Something New

What better place to start the chronicles of my family along with projects, events, and more on a weekend that is so full of meaning and remembrance than Memorial Day weekend.   Like many families around the country we used the weekend to spend time with family, enjoy the outdoors, and eat great food.  However, we especially used the weekend to think about those who have sacrificed their lives for the freedoms of our country and those who continue to serve.   I was raised by a dad who not only taught me the importance of respecting those who have fought for our blessed country but also showed me with his continued service in the…
